How to Report UPI Fraud in India: Step-by-Step Guide

Last reviewed: October 4, 2026 Reviewed by: CyberShield India Editorial Team

UPI (Unified Payments Interface) is incredibly fast and convenient, but this speed also makes it a favorite tool for cybercriminals. If you have been scammed via Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, or BHIM, you must act within the "Golden Hour" (the first 2-24 hours) to freeze the scammer's bank account.

Immediate Steps to Take After UPI Fraud

1. Do NOT Panic, But Act Fast

Do not waste time trying to call the scammer back or arguing with them. Your primary goal is to alert the banking system to stop the funds from being withdrawn.

2. Call the 1930 Cyber Helpline

Immediately dial 1930 (the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal helpline). Provide them with the UTR (Unique Transaction Reference) number of your transaction. Note: Due to high call volumes, you might be placed on hold. Stay on the line.

3. Contact Your Bank's Fraud Desk

Call your bank's 24/7 customer care number (found on the back of your debit card or the official banking app). Request them to raise a "UPI Chargeback" or "Fraudulent Transaction Dispute".

If you need the official, verified contact information for your specific bank, use our direct guides:

What Evidence to Preserve

Before you file a formal written complaint, gather the following:

  • Bank Statement: Highlighting the fraudulent transaction.
  • UTR Number / Transaction ID: A 12-digit number (e.g., 3098XXXXXXXX).
  • Screenshots: Any WhatsApp chats, SMS logs, or call logs with the scammer.
  • Scammer's Details: The UPI ID or phone number where the money was sent.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not use Google to search for "Google Pay Customer Care": Scammers run fake ads with their own phone numbers. Only use the help section inside the official app.
  2. Do not share your UPI PIN to "receive" a refund: A UPI PIN is only required to send money, never to receive it.
  3. Do not pay a "Recovery Agent": If someone online claims they can hack the scammer and return your money for a fee, they are running a secondary scam.

Official Resources

What to Expect Next: Once the complaint is lodged on the 1930 portal, a lien (freeze) is placed on the recipient's bank account. If the funds are still present, they will be blocked and potentially returned to you after police verification.
