Realizing that money has been fraudulently deducted from your credit or debit card is a terrifying experience. Whether it was an international POS scam, card skimming, or a fake e-commerce website, the first 24 hours are known as the "Golden Hour".
If your issue involves UPI (like Google Pay or PhonePe), please read our specialized UPI Fraud Reporting Guide. For card fraud and chargebacks, here is the exact emergency checklist you need to follow immediately.
Step 1: Secure Your Accounts Instantly
If you suspect your device or banking credentials are compromised:
- Block your Cards: Open your banking app and temporarily block or hotlist your debit/credit cards.
- Change Passwords: Using a different device (like a family member's phone), change your NetBanking and email passwords immediately.
- Disconnect: If you installed any screen-sharing apps (like AnyDesk or TeamViewer) on the scammer's instructions, turn off your Wi-Fi/Mobile Data immediately and uninstall the apps.
Step 2: Call the 1930 Cyber Helpline
The Government of India operates a centralized cyber fraud helpline.
- Dial 1930. This connects you to the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
- Tell the operator you are reporting an unauthorized financial transaction.
- They will ask for the UTR number (the 12-digit transaction ID), the date, the amount, and your account details.
Step 3: Inform Your Bank's Fraud Desk
Do not wait until the next morning to visit the branch.
- Call the official customer care number found on the back of your bank card.
- Tell them you have been scammed and ask them to "raise a dispute" for the fraudulent transactions.
- Ask them to send an alert to the destination bank (the bank where your money went) to attempt a freeze on that account.
Step 4: Gather Digital Evidence
Before you lose access or chats get deleted, collect:
- Bank Statements: Download the PDF statement showing the fraud.
- Screenshots: Take screenshots of the SMS debits, WhatsApp chats with the scammer, fake websites, or fake payment receipts.
📝 Step 5: Draft a Formal Written Complaint
A phone call is just the first step. You need a formal written document to submit to the Police Station and your Bank Manager the next day.

Critical Mistakes to Avoid
⚠️ Do NOT search for customer care numbers on Google. Scammers run fake ads for "Bank Customer Care" or "Helpline". They will trick you into downloading apps and stealing more money. ⚠️ Do NOT pay a "Recovery Hacker". Anyone claiming they can hack the scammer to get your money back for an upfront fee is a scammer themselves. Recovery can only happen through the official banking and legal channels.
